Composition and community structure of mangroves distributed on the east coast of Marajó Island, Brazil

The present study aimed to determine the composition and structure of fringe inland mangroves near mouth Amazon River in Marajó Island. We established five sites and, each site, we a zone an zone. In zone, delimited 400-m2 plots, selected arboreal individuals with minimum height 1 m. were grouped into diameter classes basal area, analyzed phytosociological parameters. composition, richness, density, diversity dendrogram analysis used compared between sampled zones. our exploration, 344 recorded, distributed 10 species, suggesting that Island has one most diverse mangrove forests ever recorded world. also three typical species mangrove, namely, Rhizophora racemosa, Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa. observed have occur other ecosystems (e.g., várzea igapós), such as Paeonia officinalis, Phalaris aquatica, Virola surinamensis. no significant variation zones was found terms richness density. NMDS explained variance 95.3% but clear pattern dissimilarity inland. cluster analysis, four groups statistically well supported, explanation 85% on dendrogram. These characteristics are important for conservation policies specific management plans Salvaterra, since, just vegetation is unique this region.
